Truth and Freedom in Christ

Colossians 2:8-23

  1. Paul’s Against False Doctrine

2 Timothy 4

Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear.

How do we spot false teaching and false teachers?

a. It is contrary to the whole of or questions the inerrancy of scripture.

-It requires proof texting. (Taking a verse out of context and building a doctrine around it)

-It requires the speaker to cast doubt on the inspiration and/or inerrancy of scripture.

-It requires the speaker to say “God told me this” or “God showed me this”.

b. It glorifies instead of God.

c. It adds to or takes away from salvation by through .

d. It denies the full of Jesus Christ.

2. Paul’s Proclamation of in Christ

a. Freedom from

b. Freedom from .

c. Freedom from .

How then should we live?

Love God- you will avoid anything that offends him or is elevated above Him.

Love others- you will avoid anything that offends others.

Legalism says: I have to do certain things and be a certain way to please God and earn his favor.

Freedom says: I am loved by God and forgiven by God. I love Him and want to live in a way that brings him glory.
