Leviticus 9
Intro: Leviticus 1-8
God outlines 5 mosaic offerings that would help them acknowledge their sin, know God’s holiness and point to a future sacrifice that was God’s best sent for us.
God ordained certain men to be mouth pieces for his laws, examples to the congregation and ministers of hope to the nation.
Jesus is the better sacrifice and the ultimate high priest.
Sin was and always will be a major problem when it comes to our relationship with God.
- is “do as the Lord commands.” V6
“And Moses said, “This is the thing that the Lord commanded you to do, that the glory of the Lord may appear to you.””
Leviticus 9:6 ESV
-
- Joy
- Blessings
- Protection
- Testifies
2. Godly leaders must be dealing with their own first. V7
“Then Moses said to Aaron, “Draw near to the altar and offer your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and for the people, and bring the offering of the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.””
Leviticus 9:7 ESV
-
- Be near God to see yourself as your really are.
- Acknowledge and repent of sin that is there.
- Have a covering for your mind and heart, a cleansing work continually in you, which is the Word of God.
3. is essential for fellowship with the Holy God.
- Atonement means to cover or to reconcile referring to the process in which sin is dealt with, forgiveness is granted and a relationship with a holy God is restored.
- OT requirements for atonement
- Shedding of blood. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
- Romans 6:23 ESV
- Spotless sacrifice. John 1:29 “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” ESV
- Application of blood.
- A mediator Heb. 7:27 “He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.”
- Hebrews 7:27 ESV
- 9:11-14. 26-28 “But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”
- Hebrews 9:11-14, 26-28 ESV
- Repentance and obedience(lev. 16:29-31 ““And it shall be a statute to you forever that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves and shall do no work, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you. For on this day shall atonement be made for you to cleanse you. You shall be clean before the Lord from all your sins. It is a Sabbath of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict yourselves; it is a statute forever.” Leviticus 16:29-31 ESV
- Jesus atonement HEb. 10:10-14, 19-22 “And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,”
- Hebrews 10:10-13, 22-24 ESV
- God’s approval brings , worship, and intercession for others. V22-24
“Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them, and he came down from offering the sin offering and the burnt offering and the peace offerings. And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, and when they came out they blessed the people, and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the pieces of fat on the altar, and when all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.”

- Romans 3:25 “But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”Romans 3:21-22, 24-26 ESV
- Acts 3:19 “But what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer, he thus fulfilled. Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets long ago.”
- Acts 3:18-21 ESV
- This with Christ’ work on the cross completes our atonement before God. Heb. 10:18

““This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.”
Why this is important for us today. The emphasis on obedience and holiness in Leviticus remains. Christians must live consecrated lives, avoiding sin and living as ambassadors under the the New Covenant.
