Rocks of Remembrance

Sermon by Pastor Brent Snook / Dec 5, 2021

Series: When Death and Despair Devastate

Main Bible Text: Joshua 4:5-8

And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel: That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?  Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD;

when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever. And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.  – Joshua 4:5-8

The Rocks of Remembrance

I. Intentional

Matthew 6: 33, Philippians 3:14, 2 Timothy 3:14, Philippians 1:27

II. Servant

Philippians 1:27

“Servant” – comes from the word doulos (Greek): slave, bond servant

1 Corinthians 6:20

III. Joyful

Bible verses with admonition to be joyful:

Romans 12:12. Philippians 4:4, Galatians 5:22, Proverbs 17:22

IV. Support

A. Support in Marriage

Genesis 2:24, Genesis 2:18

B. Support in Mentoring

From Joy’s blog:

  1. Love your husband. Titus 2:4

Security for children is a result of their parents loving one another. Security does not come from always getting their way or having the latest gadget on the market.

  1. Make your home a haven.

Again, in Titus 2, older women are told to teach younger women to be “keepers at home.” We need to do all that we can to create a place of rest, love, and security for our loved ones. Home should be a place that draws our family members to it like a magnet.

  1. Eat meals together.

There is something to be said for gathering around the kitchen table, joining hands in prayer and chatting about the day while enjoying food prepared with love. These conversations go a long way with our children, maybe further than the homemade biscuits!

  1. Instill God’s Word in their hearts.

Long after the kids are out of our house, the Bible they learned will still have a place in their memory. Isaiah 40:8 says, “The grass fadeth but the Word of our God shall stand for ever.”

  1. Discipline consistently.

C. Support in Ministry

4 Things Death Teaches Us

  1. The vanity of the world
  2. The vileness of sin
  3. The helplessness of man
  4. The preciousness of Christ
