My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

October 19, 2022

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
That’s a Good Question!

Matthew 27:45-46 (NIV) From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).

Matthew 27:47-49 (NLT) Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah. 48 One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. 49 But the rest said, “Wait! Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”

1. He was .

Luke 2:46 (NIV) After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

John 5:39 (NIV) You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me

The

Acts 10:38 (NLT) And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

2. He stayed in the .

Matthew 27:26-31 (NIV) Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified. 27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Psalm 22:12-14 (NIV) Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. 13 Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me. 14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint.

Psalm 22:6 (NIV) But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people.

Matthew 27:35 (NIV) When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Psalm 22:18 (NIV) They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.

Matthew 27:39-44 (NIV) Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Psalm 22:7-8 (NIV) All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. 8 “He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.”

Psalm 22:15-17 (NIV) My mouth is dried up like a [piece of clay], and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death. Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. 17 All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me.

3. He sought God’s .

Matthew 26:3-5 (NIV) 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 5 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”

John 13:27 (NIV) …So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”

Psalm 22:1-2 (NIV) My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish? 2 My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.

This wasn’t a crisis of , it was a declaration of .

Matthew 27:50 (NIV) And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

John 19:30 …“It is finished!”

Psalm 22:31 They will tell people yet to be born about his righteousness—that he has finished it.
