God Is Good: Changing the Way You Pray

God Is Good: Changing the Way You Pray

EVERYTHING Starts with our core belief.

We have to BECOME and STAY convinced of the goodness of God in order to pray with FAITH and confidence.

Psalm 23:6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

“Omnibenevolent” God is…. All / Totally /  Supremely Good ….. Nothing BUT good.

The Goodness of God is One of His Attributes

Psalm 107:1 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His loving kindness is everlasting

Hosea 3:5 Afterward the sons of Israel will return and seek the LORD their God and David their king; and they will come trembling to the LORD and to His goodness in the last days.

The goodness of God is not only an attribute of God but also a foundational truth every Christian can embrace as their Core Belief.

Consider some of the reasons God’s goodness is important to us.

(1) “Goodness”  is prominent in the opening chapters of the Bible. Repeatedly, God pronounced everything which He created “good.”

(2) The goodness of God appears to be the sum total of all of God’s attributes. The goodness of God may thus be viewed as one facet of His glorious nature and character and also the overall summation of His nature and character.

Because God is supremely good means that He has no evil in Him,

– His intentions and motivations are always good,

– He always does what is right, and the outcome of His plan is always good:

Genesis 50:2 (Joseph speaking) “You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.”

Psalm 119:68 You are good and do only good; teach me your decrees.

Psalm 100:5 For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.

– Out of His goodness (or included IN it) comes his mercy, grace, love, forgiveness.

Exodus 33:18 Moses responded, “Then show me your glorious presence.” 19 The Lord replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.

– His goodness makes Him our safe haven in times of stress and anxiety.

Psalm 31:19 How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world. 20 You hide them in the shelter of your presence, safe from those who conspire against them. You shelter them in your presence, far from accusing tongues.

Psalm 23:6  Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

– His goodness toward us is INTENTIONAL.

Romans 2:4 Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his goodness is intended to turn you from your sin?

– God is faithful/good no matter what because His faithfulness is TIED to His goodness.

2 Timothy 2:13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.

Bottom Line: We cannot separate what is good from God. You cannot have goodness without God, just as you cannot have God without goodness.

Psalm 16:2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Master! Every good thing I have comes from you.”

God is the source of everything that is good:

James 1:17  Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes ……..

Psalm 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly

1) When the Goodness of God is your Core Belief and becomes the foundation of all your prayers, then your prayers become powerful and passionate and purposeful.

2) It also helps us when God answers no to our prayer. We may feel disappointed, but we know we can count on God’s goodness in it.

We have to be convinced of God’s goodness or we can be deceived into believing he has let us down, abandoned us, isn’t listening, isn’t good. Can lead to disaffection, doubt, slander.

If Satan can talk angels out of heaven, he can talk you into unbelief and hell. KNOW TRUTH!

1) Don’t blame the wrong person for problems, sickness, etc.

James 1:17 Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

2) Don’t let the “Father of lies”/slanderer/accuser make you question God’s goodness.

Practical Application:

You can’t know God is good based on feelings or experience….which ebb and flow.

Everyone needs an objective source of truth outside of themselves——-God’s WORD!!!!

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! (Psalm 34:8)

Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting. (Psalm 100:4-5)

With God’s goodness as your Core Belief and foundation, what do you expectantly hope He will accomplish in you and through you and for you?

Hebrews 4:16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
