Understanding Our Sin

UNDERSTANDING OUR SIN
Pastor Goss | 5.29.22
New Living Translation

Romans 3:23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

The Result Of Sin

Genesis 3:1-11 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had
made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from
any of the trees in the garden?”
2 “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied.
3 “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to
eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’ ”
4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman.
5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like
God, knowing both good and evil.”
6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked
delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit
and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.
7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their
nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.
8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord
God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees.
9 Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10 He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was
naked.”
11 “Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have you eaten from the
tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”

Genesis 2:25 Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

Genesis 3:7 At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt
shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover
themselves.

For Our Shame God Gives Us A

Genesis 3:21 And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and
his wife.

Isaiah 50:7 Because the Sovereign Lord helps me, I will not be disgraced.
Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know
that I will not be put to shame.

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of
witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down,
especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the
race God has set before us.
2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and
perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross,
disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s
throne.

Genesis 3:11-13 “Who told you that you were naked?” the Lord God asked. “Have
you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”
12 The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I
ate it.”
13 Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent
deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”

Galatians 6:4-5 Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the
satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to
anyone else.
5 For we are each responsible for our own conduct.

For Our Blame God Gives Us A

Romans 8:31-34 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is
for us, who can ever be against us?
32 Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he
also give us everything else?
33 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God
himself has given us right standing with himself.
34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was
raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand,
pleading for us.

1 Corinthians 1:8 He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from
all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns.

Genesis 3:14-19 Then the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done
this, you are cursed more than all animals, domestic and wild. You will crawl on
your belly, groveling in the dust as long as you live.
15 And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your
offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.”
16 Then he said to the woman, “I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in
pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will
rule over you.”
17 And to the man he said, “Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree
whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you. All
your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it.
18 It will grow thorns and thistles for you, though you will eat of its grains.
19 By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the
ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust
you will return.”

For Our Fame God Gives Us A

Philippians 2:3-11 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking
of others as better than yourselves.
4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling
to.
7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave
and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,
8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a
cross.
9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the
name above all other names,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and
under the earth,
11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the
Father.
