From Selfish to Selfless

FROM SELFISH TO SELFLESS
Pastor Goss | James 3:13-18 (NLT)

What Determines Whether I Am Selfish Or Selfless

My

James 3:13 (NLT) If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living
an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from
wisdom.

My

James 3:14-16 (NLT) But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in
your heart, don’t cover up the truth with boasting and lying.
15 For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things
are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.
16 For wherever there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there you will find
disorder and evil of every kind.

My

James 3:17-18 (NLT) But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace
loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy
and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.
18 And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a
harvest of righteousness.

How Do I Become Selfless

To Deal With My Mentality I Must Beyond Myself

What Am I Thinking

Proverbs 18:1-2 (NLT) Unfriendly people care only about themselves; they lash out
at common sense.
2 Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own
opinions.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NLT) We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do.
4 We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the
strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.
5 We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God.
We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

Philippians 4:8 (NLT) And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix
your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and
lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of
praise.

To Deal With My Motives I Must Beyond Myself

Why Am I Acting This Way

Proverbs 11:24-25 (NLT) Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose
everything.
25 The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be
refreshed.

John 13:35 (NLT) Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are
my disciples.

1 John 3:16 (NLT) We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for
us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.

To Deal With My Maturity I Must Beyond Myself

How Am I Acting

Philippians 2:3-8 (NLT) Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble,
thinking of others as better than yourselves.
4 Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others,
too.
5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
6 Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something
to cling to.
7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of
a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human
form,
8 he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on
a cross.

Galatians 5:13-14 (NLT) For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers
and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature.
Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.
14 For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your
neighbor as yourself.”

Matthew 16:24-25 (NLT) Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower,
you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.
25 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my
sake, you will save it.
