Everyday Worship | John 2.13-22
Pastor Blake Hanson | 3.27.22

BIG IDEA: Jesus worship is everyday living.

Hebrews 13:15–16 (NLT)

15 Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name.

16 And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.

The Issue: We have the wrong of worship.

Worship: Showing God Honor and adoration.

John 2:13–22 (NLT)

13 It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem.

14 In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money.

15 Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables.

16 Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!”

17 Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.”

18 But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.”

19 All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

20 “What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?”

21 But when Jesus said “this temple,” he meant his own body.

22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.

NOTES:

EVERYDAY WORSHIP MEANS…

1) WE SEE WHAT OTHERS

John 2:14 (NLT)

14 In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money.

John 9:1–3 (NLT)

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.

“Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?”

“It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.

NOTES:

2) WE TRUST JESUS TO WHAT HINDERS OUR WORSHIP LIFESTYLE

John 2:15 (NLT)

15 Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables.

Jeremiah 4:1 (NLT)

“O Israel,” says the Lord, “if you wanted to return to me, you could. You could throw away your detestable idols and stray away no more.

NOTES:

3) WE HAVE FOR GOD’S CHURCH

John 2:17 (NLT)

17 Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.”

Mark 11:17 (NLT)

17 He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer for all nations,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.”

“I believe a local church exists to do corporately what each Christian believer should do individually – and that is to worship God.” A.W. Tozer

NOTES:

4) WE WHAT JESUS HAS DONE AND WHAT HE PROMISES TO DO

John 2:22 (NLT)

22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.

Romans 12:1 (NLT)

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.
