What Happens When I Die?
November 3, 2024Jump to What’s Happening at Crossroads
5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (John 14:5-6)
24 “I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life. 25 “And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice — the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live. 26 The Father has life in himself, and he has granted that same life-giving power to his Son. 27 And he has given him authority to judge everyone because he is the Son of Man. 28 Don’t be so surprised! Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves will hear the voice of God’s Son, 29 and they will rise again. Those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life, and those who have continued in evil will rise to experience judgment. (John 5:24-29)
2 Possible Outcomes:
1. for those who listen and believe.
2. and condemnation for those who don’t.
16 For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
18 There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. (John 3:18)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
8 … bringing judgment on those who don’t know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his glorious power. (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9)
26 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul? 27 For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their deeds. (Matthew 16:26-27)
31 “But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. (Matthew 25:31-34)
46 “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.” (Matthew 25:46)
6 So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:6)

Wars. Hurricanes. Global turmoil. It’s natural to wonder…Is the end of the world near? In our sermon series, Let’s Talk About It: The End of the World, which starts today, we will give a broad overview of what the Bible says about the end of the world without getting bogged down with speculation on things the Bible isn’t clear about. You may not have every question answered, but you will walk away with a better understanding of the hope we have and the urgency needed to live out the mission of Jesus. If you’re interested in digging deeper into the topic and different viewpoints, we have resources to check out.
