1 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 2 “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.”
3 King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem. 4 He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?”
7 Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared.  8 Then he told them, “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!”
12 When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by another route, for God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod.  13 After the wise men were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” 14 That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary, his mother, 15 and they stayed there until Herod’s death. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “I called my Son out of Egypt.” 16 Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance. (
Matthew 2:1-4, 7-8, 12-16)

33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

When facing opposition:

1. Be careful how I .

4 Don’t answer the foolish arguments of fools, or you will become as foolish as they are. (Proverbs 26:4)

2. Don’t give the enemy .

8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are. (1 Peter 5:8-9)

3 We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do.  4 We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. (2 Corinthians 10:3-4)

3. Opposition is just another to see God at work in our lives.

10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.  11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.  12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. (Matthew 5:10-12)

13 But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again.  14 The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” (Exodus 14:13-14)
