Title: The Bad News About the Good News – Part 2

Romans 2:1-16

How will God judge the moral person?

1. God will judge based on .

(Romans 1:20 NIV) For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

(Romans 2:1 NIV) You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

(Romans 1:29-31 NIV) They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

(Romans 2:2-3 NIVNow we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth3 So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?

2. God will judge based on the .

(Romans 2:4 NIV) Or do you show contempt the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?

(Romans 2:5 NIV) But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

3. God will judge based on .

(Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV) For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

(Romans 2:6 NIV) God will give to each person according to what he has done.

(Revelation 20:11-15 NIV) Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

(Romans 2:7 NIV) To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

(Romans 2:8 NIV) But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

(Romans 2:9-10 NIV) There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

4. God will judge based on .

(Romans 2:11 NIV) For God does not show favoritism.

• A Group: Those who the law.

(Romans 2:12-13 NIV) All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obeythe law who will be declared righteous.

• B Group: Those who the truth of God’s Word

(Romans 2:12a NIV) All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law

Three Criteria:
1. People are accountable because of .
(Romans 1:19-20 NIV) since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse

2. People are accountable because of their own .

(Romans 2:14 NIV) Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law,

3. People are accountable because of their .
Romans 2:15 ESV
They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them.

(Romans 2:15 NIV) since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciencesalso bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.

(Romans 2:16 NIV) This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

(Hebrews 9:27 ESV) And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,

(Romans 2:16 NIV) This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

(Jeremiah 17:10 NLT) “But I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”

(2 Peter 2:9 NLT) The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

3 Closing Thoughts:

1. God’s wrath is .

2. God’s kindness is .

3. God’s salvation is
