Title: The Bad News About the Good News – Part 1

(Romans 1:16-17 NIV) I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

  1. Unrighteousness of Gentiles: 1:18-32
  2. Unrighteousness of the Moralists: 2:1-16
  3. Unrighteousness of Jews: 2:17-3:8
  4.  Unrighteousness of Humanity: 3:9-20

(Romans 1:18-20 NIV)The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities —his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. “What may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.”

  1. They don’t give God or .

(Romans 1:21a NIV) For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him,

  1. Suppressing the truth leads to .

(Romans 1:21a NIV) For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

(John 8:44b NIV) He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

(John 14:6 NIV) Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  1. leads to every other problem.

1st Area:

(Romans 1:22-23 NIV) Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

2nd Area: an of life

(Romans 1:24 NIV) Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

(Romans 1:18 NIV) The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness.

(Hebrews 12:5-6 NIV) And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6     because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.

(Romans 1:24-27 NIV) Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

3rd Area:

(Romans 1:28 ESV) And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

(Romans 1:29-31 NIV) They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

(Romans 1:32 NIV) Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

3 Closing Observations…

  1. The of our world declares a God who it.
  2. The day we live in is a of God’s .
  3. The decision to serve God determines our eternal .
