The Hebrews’ Wild Ride in the Wilderness

Clayton’s Wilderness Survival School

Dr. Clayton Chisum

October 12, 2025

Many of us are stuck in our comfort zone where it’s safe and easy. Today’s message will challenge that kind of life.

Exodus 12:34 (NLT)

Exodus 12:37-40 (NLT)

We have the same choice that God’s people faced in Egypt. When God calls us to step out and trust him, our answer is often to stay put

We spend half our life and the other half desperately trying to

What can I learn from the Hebrews’ time in the wilderness?

1. The purpose of your life isn’t to stay in

Exodus 16:2-3 (NLT)

Comfort can equal captivity when it keeps you from what God wants next.

This is known as “sedentary slavery” – refusing to move when God says “go”.

Romans12:1 (NLT)

Trust is born in the wilderness where comfort and control are stripped away. Faith is following in the footsteps of the Guide who’s been up the mountain a million times.

Exodus 16:4 (NLT)

2. Where ends, the begins.

Psalm 32:8-9 (NLT)

Discussion Questions:

  1. What’s one comfort zone in your life that would be hard to leave?
  2. Why do you think God often leads us into uncomfortable situations to build trust?
  3. The Hebrews left behind the only life they knew — even though it was slavery. Why do you think people sometimes choose comfort over freedom?
  4. What are some modern examples of “Camp Comfort” that can quietly keep us stuck? Pastor Clayton said, “Comfort can equal captivity when it keeps you from what God wants next.” What does that look like in real life?
  5. Why do you think God often calls us into uncomfortable or uncertain situations to grow our faith?
  6. Where might God be calling you to step out and trust Him right now? How can you tell the difference between God’s call to move and your own restlessness or impatience?
  7. What “tent” (habit, attitude, or comfort) might you need to tear down so you can follow God’s lead?
  8. How could our group encourage one another to keep following God instead of slipping back into old, comfortable patterns?
