The Story Your Scars Tell

Scars

Dr. Clayton Chisum

What stories do your scars tell?

Our wounds influence how we see God and what we think about him.

John 16:33 NLT

When addressing our scars, the point isn’t to get over the things that wound us but to get through them.

Psalm 147:3 NLT

The Bible is the story of one big scar.

2 Corinthians 11:25-26 NLT

2 Corinthians 11:27-28 NLT

Your scars can be a testimony to the world that Jesus is who he says he is, that he heals and restores, and forgives and makes new.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What is your best visible scar, and what story does it tell about your past?
  2. Clayton’s sermon highlights the difference between open wounds and scars that have healed. Are there any emotional or psychological “open wounds” in your life that haven’t yet turned into scars? How might God be part of that healing process for you?
  3. Psalm 147:3 says, “He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.” How have you experienced God’s healing or comfort during a difficult time in your life?
  4. Paul boasted about his weaknesses and scars in 2 Corinthians 11:23-30, pointing to God’s healing rather than his pain. What’s one challenge or scar in your life that could point others to God’s work in you, rather than just the hurt?
  5. The sermon encourages us not to hide our scars but to share the stories behind them. How could sharing your experiences with others bring hope or help to someone else? What holds you back from doing so?
  6. John 16:33 reminds us that we’ll face trials but can take heart because Jesus has overcome the world. How does this promise affect the way you face your own trials and sorrows?
  7. Clayton’s sermon ends by saying our scars can point people to Jesus, the Healer. What’s one practical step you can take this week to let your scars tell a story of healing and hope to someone else?
