Three things to avoid when studying the Bible:

  • Using scripture to make YOUR point
  • Using scripture to back up YOUR feelings
  • Creating hidden meaning to make YOUR point

Two pointers for studying the Bible:

  • Read the Bible so you know what it says
  • Read the Bible so you know what it means

When reading the Bible, ask these questions:

  • Who was the writer?
  • To whom was he writing?
  • To what location and from what location was he writing?
  • What was the situation or occasion?
  • When did it occur?
  • What were the historical and cultural factors at the time?

Some practical tips:

  • Let scripture interpret scripture
  • Use resources to help your interpretation of the scripture
  • Look for the application: “What is God asking me to do?”

Colossians 3:16-17 (NLT)

Discussion Questions:

  1. Matthew 6:19-21 describes two types of treasures: treasures on earth and treasures in Heaven. Have you ever found yourself putting more value on earthly treasures? If so, how can you move your desire to heavenly treasures?
  2. Read Matthew 13:44-45. These verses compare the Kingdom of Heaven to a treasure, with one man finding treasure and another seeking after treasure. Describe a time when you have set aside your earthly treasures for the most valuable treasure: the Kingdom of Heaven.
  3. To hunt treasure, you need Meaningful Motivation. What motivates you to study God’s Word to inform your steps and transform your heart?
  4. To hunt treasure, you need Dependable Direction. Have you ever struggled with believing that the Bible is 100% accurate? What helps you rely on God’s Word as absolute truth?
  5. It was stated in the sermon that God’s glory is the one constant theme throughout the Bible. Where can you see God’s glory in both the Old and New Testament?
  6. To hunt treasure, you need Desire and Determination. What are some of the obstacles that keep you from consistently reading and studying the Bible?
  7. Have you ever found yourself using scripture to make your point or back up your feelings? If so, consider sharing about it with the group.
  8. Discuss what it means to “let scripture interpret scripture” when reading and studying the Bible.
  9. Name one way you have experienced growth in your relationship with Christ in 2024.
  10. What changes will you make in 2025 to be in God’s Word even more than you were this past year?
