Series: Christianity is a Contact Sport

August 4, 2024

Dr. Clayton Chisum

Week 1: STEP INTO THE ARENA

The Christian life is not a spectator sport. We’re called to get in the game!

1 Peter 2:9 (NLT)

Christians are saved something and something.

We are saved from the consequences of sin, but we are also saved for the purpose of sharing what God has done.

Acts 2:22-24 (NLT)

Acts 2:36-38 (NLT)

If you are a Christian, you have been blessed, but for a purpose–to get in the game that God is calling you to play.

How do I know I’m ?

1 Peter 2:11-12 (NLT)

In the arena, expect to .

There’s a reason why Jesus says to “turn the other cheek” — you will get hit!

2 Timothy 3:12 (NLT)

You will face opposition, but that’s a good thing!

1 Peter 4:12-16 (NLT)

In the arena, remember .

Ephesians 6:12 (NLT)

Are you ready to trade your season tickets for a uniform and take a step into the arena?

James 1:22 (NLT)

Discussion Questions:

  1. Have you watched any of the olympics this year? What has been your favorite?
  2. What similarities do you see between an olympic national team and the church?
  3. 1 Peter 2:9 says that Christians are on a special team. We have a unique identity and position, but also a specific calling. Discuss these concepts with your group.
  4. How does a Christian know if they are out of the stands and actually standing in the arena of an active Christian life? (1 Peter 2:11-12 / Matthew 5:13-16)
  5. Why is persecution a guaranteed part of a believer in Jesus? How has that played out in your life or people you know?
  6. 1 Peter 4:12-16 says that persecution ought to be considered a good thing. How?
  7. How does identifying the true enemy we’re fighting set us up to share Jesus with the world? How can we hate the sin but love the sinner? How can this Christian action be played out in your life this week?
