The Tools of Deconstruction

Don’t Wreck Your Faith

March 19, 2023

Dr. Clayton Chisum

Genesis 3:11-13 NLT

Deconstruction can be like taking a sharpie to Scripture

1. We cherry-pick it

Psalm 119:105 NLT

2. We make cultural edits

Genesis 3:1 NLT

Romans 1:21-22 NLT

3. We desire control and love freedom

Romans 8:7 NLT

Romans 6:1-2 NLT

Deconstruction should be like taking a shovel to Scripture

When you come to God’s Word with the desire to know the Truth, it will be found!

Psalm 119:18 NLT

1. We should dig deep!

Luke 6:47-48 NLT

2. We should be rebels!

We are to rebel against the world, not God.

Romans 12:2 ESV

A better form of deconstruction- taking Scripture and using it to critique the world’s corruption in our lives. Exactly what Jesus did!

Deconstruction without reconstruction is a tragedy

John 8:32, 36 NLT

Discussion Questions:

Today we’re talking about the difference between good and bad deconstruction of Scripture.

  1. What are some specific ways we tend to take a sharpie to scripture (cherry-picking verses, using modern culture and beliefs to interpret biblical positions)?
  2. How do those who are far from God do this?
  3. Beneficial deconstruction of scripture is using a shovel, not a sharpie. How does a shovel illustrate proper deconstruction of the Bible?
  4. Do you struggle really digging into God’s Word? How can you improve?
  5. How can you walk alongside someone who may be struggling with their faith, dealing with church hurt, or having honest questions about the Bible?
