Questions for Small Group Discussion

Read James 1:19-27

James tells us that we should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. (James 1:19)

  • Describe a time when a conflict was resolved as a result of being quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.
  • Describe a time when a conflict escalated as a result of NOT being quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.

James compares listening to the word but not doing what it says to someone who looks at himself in a mirror but then immediately forgets what he looks like. (James 1:23)

  • What are some other metaphors that could be used for reading/listening to the word but not doing what it says?
  • What are some things in the Bible that are easy to read but difficult to carry out?

James tells us that those who put into practice the things they read in God’s Word will be blessed in what they do. (James 1:25)

  • Describe a time when you put something into practice from God’s Word that resulted in a blessing.
  • What are some specific ways we can discipline ourselves to put into practice the things we read in God’s Word?

Marshall asked the following question: “If God answered every one of your prayers, would it change anyone’s life other than your own?”

Think about your own prayer life. Do you make it a habit to pray for:

  • Your family members
  • Your church
  • The lost
  • The underprivileged
  • Your enemies (ouch!)

Spend some time in prayer for these and others that God brings to mind.
