Today’s Message: A Tale of Two Tails

Noah Mccormick

October 30, 2022

Today we are looking at another strange story in the book of Judges.

Judges 13:5 (NLT)

God created Samson to help rescue the Israelites from the Philistines. God gifted Samson with incredible strength.

Samson challenged some of the Philistine men to a riddle:

Judges 14:14 (NLT)

The Philistine men resorted to drastic measures to answer the riddle. On the last day of the challenge, they approached Samson:

Judges 14:18 (NLT)

Things begin to spiral downward for Samson at this point:

Judges 15:1-8 (NLT)

Samson misused his .

God called Samson to be a judge; not THE judge!

Samson misused his .

Samson used his incredible strength to seek his own revenge on the Philistines.

Troubles WILL come!

Psalm 34:19

God’s strength is demonstrated when we use our and our for His .

Discussion Questions for Small Groups

Read Judges 14-15

  1. Why do you think Samson challenged the Philistine men to a riddle?
  2. When Samson learned that his wife’s father gave her in marriage to Samson’s best man, Samson sought revenge on the Philistines instead of his wife’s father. Why do you think Samson reacted this way?
  3. Samson obviously had some serious anger issues, but God still chose him for a specific purpose. Who are some other unlikely people God has used to accomplish His purposes?
  4. In his sermon, Noah talked about Samson misusing his position and misusing his gifts for revenge and personal gain rather than for God’s glory. Discuss how this can happen in our own lives.
  5. Psalm 34:19 tells us that “The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.” If we truly believe that, why is it so tempting to take matters into our own hands rather than to rely on God?
