My Favorite Verse is…

Dumb Things Christians Say

October 17, 2021

Dr. Clayton Chisum

Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)

We must wield the Word carefully because every word is placed specifically in the context that God desires.

One of the most misquoted verses is Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV).

Today’s dumb thing Christians say (do) is when we willfully or ignorantly .

This can be harmful as we’re telling people of a promise that isn’t in the Bible. This is why we need to understand how to correctly read scripture and faithfully live it out!

Two truths to hold on to:

  1. You cannot live a life in scripture when you it the wrong way.
  2. If you God’s Word, you will him to the world.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

This verse is commonly misinterpreted during a difficult season as a promise that God has a plan and will bring us through it, or thinking if we trust God and follow him, we will prosper and have a perfect life.

!

In order to understand what is going on inside the verse, you have to take a look at what’s going on around it.

You can do this is ever expanding circles: the verse, the paragraph, the chapter/story, the book, and the whole Bible.

For Jeremiah 29:11, does the surrounding scripture and the whole Bible back up what you may think it’s saying (“God has a prosperous future ahead for me!”)?

Luke 6:22 (NIV)

Matthew 16:24 (NIV)

the environment of the verse.

God used Jeremiah as God’s mouthpiece to the people of Israel. Jeremiah writes a letter to the exiles in Babylon in Jeremiah 29, delivering both good and bad news.

Jeremiah 29:10 (NIV)

Jeremiah 29:2-6 (NIV)

God doesn’t say to plant seeds and move on, he says to stay and wait for the harvest.

in the Valley- Stop moping around about how bad you have it and start thriving.

Jeremiah 29:7 (NIV)

This is not our , but it is our !

So, don’t run from it, don’t see out a different life!

God promises a so we will not be overcome by the .

His promise is not to give us an easy life, but to fix what is wrong, to replace this broken kingdom with his kingdom in Heaven. This may not change your present situation, but it should change your hope!

The secret to life is not to know the but to know the .

If you feel abandoned by God, he is writing you a letter, saying “I am here and I am all you need.”

Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NIV)

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

The main subject of the verse isn’t his plan, it’s him! The verse shouldn’t cause us to run toward a prosperous future, but toward God.
