A Fresh Start

Series: Squeaky Clean

September 12, 2021

Dr. Clayton Chisum

When we say we want a fresh start, what we’re really saying is “We want a fresh start with God.” We need his forgiveness. We need him to sort it all out, to erase our mistakes, and to restore us to our fullest potential… because we’ve really messed it all up!

Romans 3:23 (ESV)

Principle One

These fresh start moments are found in the gospels- the stories of Jesus are full of fresh starts.

#1. A fresh start requires a !

In Mark 2, a man received a fresh start from Jesus and was healed of a terrible disease.

Mark 2:5 (ESV)

Mark 2:1-2 (ESV)

People came to see a miracle, but Jesus used it as an opportunity to preach instead.

Mark 2:3-4 (ESV)

Four friends showed up with a fifth, a friend needing a fresh start. They were desperate to get to Jesus, desperate for healing and a fresh start for their friend.

Mark 2:10-12 (ESV)

Have you made a move toward Jesus? When was the last time you stepped towards Him? Things will never change until you take that first step…

Principle Two

Jesus healed a man in Mark 3- healed him on the Sabbath.

Mark 3:1-3 (ESV)

Jesus knew what he was doing; he knew the rules about working on the Sabbath. He could have waited for tomorrow, but he didn’t!

#2. A fresh start can happen .

Grace is immediate and readily available. You don’t have to wait.

1 John 1:9 (ESV)

Whatever the sin is, a fresh start is right there for you, when you confess you’ve messed up… that fresh start can happen fast!

Principle Three

Mark 5:2-5 (ESV)

This guy was in a deep dark place, living in a tomb. His issues and problems were too big for anyone to fix. He was plagued with daily reminders of his failures. Have you ever felt this way?

Jesus showed up! He took his problems and healed him. He was the only one who could!

#3. A fresh start is not hindered by your .

It doesn’t matter what you’ve done or who you’ve been. Your failures are not big enough to overcome God’s love for you. They’re not strong enough to overpower the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for you.

Application

#4. A fresh start begins with .

Mark 5:18-20 (ESV)

#5. Tell somebody there’s “.”

Romans 3:23-24 (ESV)

Every time we mess up, God has an abundant supply of fresh starts- you can never be too far gone for God to rescue, restore, and give you a do-over.
