Judas the Jacked-Up

Series: The Dirty Dozen — Week #12

August 8, 2021

Dr. Clayton Chisum

Which disciple do you identify with the most?

  1. Peter the Proud
  2. Andrew the Evangelist
  3. James the Jolt
  4. John the Geriatric
  5. Philip the Pessimist
  6. Nathanael the Known
  7. Matthew the Money Guy
  8. Thomas the Timid
  9. James the John Doe
  10. Simon the Slicer
  11. Thaddeus the Thinker

Principle One

Matthew 26:18-25 (ESV)

John 12:1-8 (ESV)

Matthew 26:14-16 (ESV)

#1. Are you your faith?

Are you faking your faith? Is your Christianity a façade for others to see? That’s exactly what Judas was doing.

John 13:27-30 (ESV)

Principle Two

#2. Are you following the Jesus of the or the Jesus ?

Judas followed Jesus because he wanted the “benefits” he thought he would get from being a disciple.

Judas is always the last name in the list of disciples. He wasn’t part of the inner circle. In essence, he wasn’t all in. Judas was just there.

When you’re not all in, you tend to make Jesus something He’s not.

Matthew 26:14-15 (ESV)

If you’re not worshipping the Jesus of Scripture, then you aren’t worshipping Jesus.

Principle Three

There’s a debate whether or not Judas was destined to betray Jesus or if he had the free will to do it himself. The fact is that Judas betrayed Jesus. He walked with Jesus for three years, and still fell.

It’s a warning for us to remain faithful as we put our trust in Jesus.

Matthew 26:47-50 (ESV)

Matthew 27:3-5 (ESV)

Judas changed his mind. He recognized his sin, but yet, didn’t repent.

#3. The saddest part of the story is not that , but that he didn’t .

2 Peter 3:9 (ESV)

God wants everyone to be saved and forgiven. God’s love is that big!

Feeling sorry for your sin does not equal forgiveness and it does not make you right with God.

1 John 1:9 (ESV)
