Who’s at the Table?

Series: Our Imperfect Family #2

April 18, 2021

Dr. Clayton Chisum

This week we continue our sermon series talking about families. And guess what… Jesus had a family, too! His family was messed up just like yours and yet he was the perfect son and brother.

Hebrews 4:15 (NIV)

At some point, Jesus lost his father, and his family was incomplete. Yet we know from scripture that he had a big family.

Matthew 13:55–56 (ESV)

#1. We are all born .

You are born into a physical family, and we learned last week that families are so important to God.

But something really interesting happened in the gospel of Matthew that takes our perspective of family and flips it on its head.

Matthew 12:46–50 (ESV)

We are all born into a family, but…

#2. Some of us are .

When we give our lives to Christ, we are born into a spiritual family.

John 1:12–13 (ESV)

Galatians 4:4–7 (ESV)

If you look at our main text today (Matthew 12:46-50), Jesus is saying that in the kingdom of heaven the most important family connection is spiritual, not physical.

Our spiritual family is not bound by gender, ethnicity, or social standing:

Galatians 3:26–28 (ESV)

Our spiritual family is diverse as well:

Revelation 7:9–10 (ESV)

What does all this mean for me and my family?

The change your family needs will come from God, and it starts with you being obedient and available for God to work through you. So influence your family, and then strive to make your family a family of influence.

Be a family

Be intentional with your life and stop isolating your influence. Christians don’t hide out, they are called out!

1 Peter 2:9 (ESV)

What about your spiritual family?

The defining characteristic of a spiritual family is love for one another:

John 13:34–35 (ESV)

When we love each other, we become a church of influence, and it starts by asking this question:

Who’s missing at the ?

There are always two empty seats at our spiritual table — one for the believer who is missing, and one for the lost. They both need to be invited to the meal.

Hebrews 10:24–25 (ESV)

God is in the change business, he wants to change lives, and you are his answer. Let’s get to work!
