Many misguided believers and charismatic denominations jump in the middle of Acts 2 and claim to speak in tongues. They pray for Pentecost to happen again. To pray for Pentecost to happen again is to ignore the simple fact that it was a historical event, prophesied centuries earlier, with non-repeatable action. We cannot exactly duplicate Pentecost any more than we can duplicate Bethlehem or Calvary. So, we talked last time about the significance, the sound, and the sight of Pentecost.
IV. The of Pentecost (4,6)
- Something occurred – sound of a rushing, mighty wind. Something occurred – tongues of fire sat on each of them. And something occurred – they spoke in other languages.
- What is “?” Tongues is a language, except to the person speaking, that God gives to the believer for the purpose of praise to God and of God’s Word.
- When the Holy Spirit came upon these apostles, they were given a ability by God to communicate the message of God in the precise, , actual human language of the hearer, and the apostle who was speaking had not previously known, studied, or learned that language.
- All through the rest of the NT, we read of who were filled with the Spirit who did speak in tongues.
