Calvary Baptist Church Red Bank Focus on Financial Gospel Partnership Archived – July 23, 2023 View This Week’s Note View All Past Notes View This Note w/o Blanks Main Scripture Reference(s) Philippians 4:14-23 Focus on Financial Gospel Partnership July 23, 2023 / Philippians 4:14-23 In this passage, we have a wonderful theology of giving and receiving that every believer, every pastor, and church member alike, should consider very closely. The Philippian church is a model of giving, and Paul is a model of receiving. Here is what’s happening: the Apostle Paul is trying to say thank you and show gratitude for the financial support the church at Philippi had given to him. In addressing the topic this way, Paul very masterfully avoids three common pitfalls associated with talking about money. The first pitfall is . The second pitfall is . The third pitfall is . Here is the main point of the passage: It is important for God’s people to sacrificially give their money to support those who are faithfully doing God’s work and preaching God’s Word, not for the minister’s or the ministry’s benefit, but for the benefit of their own eternal . I. Financial giving and gospel are inseparably . (14-16) To put it simply, if you are not giving, you are not really a partner. You are more like a or a customer. No other church entered into this kind of partnership. Apparently, some were enjoying the of Paul’s teaching and pastoral care, but not assuming the of giving. Partnership involves more than , but money is important. II. Every pastor should feel to talk about money because every pastor should about the fruitfulness of God’s people in the church. (17) He wants the church in Philippi to bear fruit! He wants them to spiritually. More than I want to see money come in, I want to see come in. I want to see growth and knowledge and and faithfulness in every area of all of your lives, including how you handle your money. III. Sacrificial giving is an act of to God. (18) Just as OT sacrifices made a smell that would ascend to the sky, this verse says that sacrificial giving pleases God like a pleasant smell pleases us. The behind the offering is that which determines how pleasing it is to God. IV. Giving in gospel partnership results in God your needs. (19) Proverbs 3:9-10 “Honour the Lord with thy substance…So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.” Proverbs 11:25 “The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.” Proverbs 19:17 “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 “He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” We are not promised that God will supply all our , but all our needs. Don’t claim this if you are not obeying God’s commands in giving.
