Calvary Baptist Church Red Bank Focus on a New System of Accounting Archived – May 14, 2023 View This Week’s Note View All Past Notes View This Note w/o Blanks Main Scripture Reference(s) Philippians 3:4-9 Focus on a New System of Accounting May 14, 2023 / Greg Powell / Philippians 3:4-9 Paul has just severely warned the believers in Philippi to beware of the Jewish false teachers who were wanting to add to grace. It wasn’t Jesus only, but Jesus plus rituals, Jesus plus good works, Jesus plus their religious heritage. They were trusting in their flesh, and Paul doesn’t hold back in calling them dogs and evil workers. Now, what Paul does next is call out these religious leaders to a showdown of spiritual credentials. If anyone had reason to put total confidence in his flesh, it was Paul and it wasn’t even close. I. An Impressive (4-6) Paul here rattles off seven things that all would have added up to a lot of spiritual . He is going to audit his own life, but then show it doesn’t up. The Proper – “circumcised the eighth day.” The Proper – “the stock of Israel.” The Proper – “tribe of Benjamin.” The Proper – “Hebrew of the Hebrews.” The Proper – “touching the Law, a Pharisee.” The Proper – “zeal in persecuting the church.” The Proper – touching the righteousness of the law, blameless.” Now with all that said, Paul gets to his point – never mind my pedigree, my performance, or my passion. Let me give you my testimony. II. An Insightful (7-8) Paul slips into accounting terminology. The term he uses for gain is the accounting term for something in the column; the term he uses for loss is something you record as a or an expense. The word Paul uses here would have made the Philippian church shiver. It’s a crass word that is translated by the KJV as . It is intended to us and strike us with the utter worthlessness of a life from Jesus. You can have a pile of dung or you can have Jesus Christ. III. An Important (9) He needed what theologians call . It means “to put to someone’s account.” Notice the last word of verse 9 – you claim all this by . When we stand before God, we will either be in Christ or in ourselves. There is only one credential you need on your resume to get into and it is a righteousness credential that comes by faith in Jesus Christ.
