He never wanted the church to become a watered-down, hodgepodge place of theological thinking and debate. This passage is important because it teaches believers to guard and protect the true grace gospel of Jesus Christ. The old axiom is true, the best offense is a strong defense. What do we need to be strong on gospel defense? I. What We (1) When Paul says , he is simply saying “now then” and introducing a new thought and moving on to other matters. He gives a command to “ in the Lord.” Every church should be a things church. When Paul challenges the Philippians to rejoice in the Lord, he does so in the context of the church from those who would teach a “ salvation.” Salvation and joy are only in Jesus Christ. This will not be found in anyplace else or anyone else. II. Who We (2) Paul uses strong descriptions and tells the believers to ! It’s a triple warning. The gospel of doing more, praying more, giving more, working more – is a gospel that must be avoided. Avoid the Over time, the of circumcision became more important that the real relationship. Don’t let anybody add a sign after Jesus. III. Who We (3) We worship God from the . We about Jesus the most. We trust in ourselves the . Everyone puts their in something. The Christian’s confidence is not in his or her own effort or goodness. My faith has found a resting place, Not in device or creed; I trust the ever living One, His wounds for me shall plead. I need no other argument, I need no other plea, It is enough that Jesus died, And that He died for me.
