Here is the high bar and goal to shoot for. One Puritan preacher from the 1700s wisely said that an example is the best argument. Jesus Christ is about to be shown to us as the greatest argument against selfishness and pride – and the most amazing example of humility. One commentator said, “volumes have been written on these verses.” But the point of them is easy to see: Jesus Christ, the highest ranked Person in existence who held the highest position in the universe, willingly left it in order to stoop to the lowest degraded position in existence to save sinners who don’t deserve it – you and me. That was His mindset. We need to focus on the mind of Jesus today. I. He (6) The first that Jesus Christ voluntarily surrendered was the right to like God. There was never a time when Jesus did not . There was never a time when Jesus was not God. We want to the ladder, He voluntarily came ! He did not consider being God grounds for getting but for . What are you for? What are you holding on to? II. He Served (7) He emptied Himself. We call this the of Christ. I like what Tozer says that “He His deity, but He did not His deity.” Here Jesus was existing in the form, shape, and appearance as God and He was willing to set that and become a slave in form, shape, and appearance. The slave of the Roman world was deprived of most basic rights. Jesus became like the of society. He didn’t pretend to be one or take on the role of one…He one. Thinking of others is just the beginning. Next, we must put it into . We do this by being a to all. III. He Sacrificed (8) Many of us say we are servants, that is, until it us something. A missionary saw a sign in a merchandiser’s window: “ crosses.” That’s what a lot of Christians look for today. Jesus Christ willingly chose a mindset that put Himself in complete to God as a servant. That meant He had to . Not only did it take humility for Jesus to go to the cross, but it takes humility for you to your need for what Jesus did on the cross. Nobody gets into the family of God without – in humility; acknowledging that there is nothing of ourselves worthy of saving. Go back to verse 5 for the .
