1. For 400 years, Israel waited and , waited and , waited and

2. God does not always do things the way that we Him to do things. But we can know, that God does always do things, the way that they be done…

“This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to

be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant

through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want

to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid

to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save the people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’

(which means ‘God with us.’)” (Matthew 1:18-22)

3. This person, this Promised One, would not just be some special prophet or angelic being.

This Promised One would literally be: , taking upon Himself the of humanity!

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” (John 1:1, 14a)

4. Essentially, Jesus took the following approach:

a. Privately, he chose a limited, select group of followers, to whom he the full truth about his kingdom, his role, and his divine nature. (Mark 10:32-34)

b. Publicly, his teaching was provocative and authoritative, and he let his miraculous deeds reveal of his authority. Publicly, he did what could do, then allowed the masses to connect the dots over time.

“Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me,

and I in the Father.” (John 10:37-38)

c. Jesus’ final, conclusive statement and proof that his claims were , was his from the dead.

Today’s “Big Idea”…

greatest is solved by greatest .

Small Group Discussion Questions

  1. Pastor Darin unpacked the whole Old Testament in about 30 minutes. Is there a part of the Old Testament that you never understood or saw how it fit into the big picture?

  2. Why do you think it is so difficult for us to accept the fact that God does things differently than we’d like Him to?

  3. What do you think about Jesus’ plan to reveal His true nature? Why do you think He did it this way?

  4. If you were to meet Jesus when He walked the earth, what would you expect Him to be like? How does this compare to Scripture’s description of Him?

  5. The Bible is very clear that there is nothing we can do to reconcile our brokenness. Why do we still try to do it on our own?
