John 14:28-31 You Should Rejoice

Introduction: In a sense, this entire chapter has been anticipating the of Christ!

A.  You Should have Rejoiced

Calvin: “The disciples unquestionably loved Christ, but not as they ought to have done for some carnal affection was mixed with their love.”

The love of Christ for His own is !

The Father is greater than Jesus? 

Hermon Ridderbos: “[That phrase has] occasioned an assortment of profound dogmatic discussions of the intratrinitarian ontological relationship between the Son and the Father and the relationship between Jesus’ divine and human natures.” 

Calvin: “This passage has been tortured in various ways.” 

What does it mean to say that Jesus and the Father are one in being (ontologically one)? 

D.A. Carson: “In the clause before us, The Father is greater than I cannot be taken to mean that Jesus is not God, nor that he is a lesser God; the historical context of Jewish monotheism forbids the latter, and the immediate literary context renders the former irrelevant.”

The way the Father is greater than the Son is only seen in the current state of the Son — In the

ESS — Eternal Subordation of the Son (Sometimes: EFS — Eternal Functional Subordination of the Son) Vs. Eternal Generation of the Son

There is a single divine and purpose.

B. That You May Believe 

If Jesus were to talk with us today, would He commend our love for Him, or would He tell us that it is mixed with carnal affections? 

As we grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, our love for Christ toward n. 

We rest in the one who loves us !

C.  The Ruler of This World is Coming

The ruler of this world is .

Satan is the ruler of this world because he exercises tyranny over the world with the of God. 

Jesus’ to the Father is a display of His love for the Father!

The final line could be taken as an exhortation to to the one who is worthy of our devotion!
