John 14:12 Greater Works

Introduction: The Proper Perspective

People often gravitate toward miracles when thinking about the “greater things.”

The problem with Miracles:

— To do the same miracles that Jesus has done isn’t something that has happened — let alone greater ones.

— Believers do not perform Miracles today (God still does miraculous things)

Could this be speaking of miracles here but placing a condition of faith on it?

The reference to believe here has in mind the object of belief, not the quantity of belief.

Could this be speaking of miracles here but placing a condition by saying all do not have the gift of miracles?

This doesn’t make sense — Jesus says whoever believes, not whoever believes and has the gift of miracles.

What are the Greater Works?

Luke 10:2

The return of the 72 was characterized by joy

Proper Perspective: You should rejoice that your name is written in heaven

The Apostles in the Book of Acts did extraordinary things, but the emphasis was always on the proclamation of their faith.

“The reason why the disciples will do greater things than Christ is that when he has entered into possession of His Kingdom, he will demonstrate his power more fully from heaven.” ~ John Calvin

Acts 1:1-2

How Can we be about the works talked about in John 14:12?

A. Faith — one cannot expect to have any impact for Christ in the area of evangelism if they have not placed their faith and trust in Jesus.

B. Prayer — The importance of prayer in evangelism cannot be overstated.

C. Obedience —

     — A refusal to adopt the values of the world

     — Holding fast to biblical doctrine

     — perseverance
