John 14:1-11 Comfort

Why would Jesus tell the disciples not to let their hearts be troubled?

Their hearts were troubled.

Jesus was troubled, and this caused the disciple’s to be troubled.

At this moment, the disciples need the solace that only Jesus can provide.

These comforting words to His disciples have brought comfort to millions of people throughout history.

Let not your Hearts be Troubled

How do you calm a troubled heart?

A. Believe in God and Believe in Jesus

“If He (Jesus) tells his followers not to let their hearts be troubled, must it not be because he has ample and justifiable reason?” ~ DA Carson

Christians are to be realists about troubles in life but also about the goodness and power of God

Jesus is not speaking about the power of positive thinking or having faith in faith.

Trust has an object: Jesus.

“God is possessed of infinite power, wisdom, and goodness. He knows what is best for you, and He makes all things work together for your good. He is on the Throne, ruling amid the army of heaven and among the inhabitance of the earth, so that none can stay his hand.” ~AW Pink

Psalm 42:11

The Trinity: One in Being but distinct persons — but one is will and purpose.

Matthew 11:28

Trust in what God has said, His promises, and what He has done for you.

Prepare a Place for You

B.  A Second cure for a troubled heart is found in the fact that Jesus left to prepare a place in Heaven.

How do Jesus’ words here bring comfort?

A. A planned Home

“Home is where we are generally loved for our own sakes, and not for our gifts or possessions; the place where we are loved to the end, never forgotten, and always welcome….Believers are in a strange land and at school in this life. The life to come, they will be at home.” ~JC Ryle

B. Perment Dwelling Place

C. A Spacious Place for God’s People

    Many Rooms

“There will be room for all believers and room for all sorts, for little saints as well as great ones, for the weakest believer as well as the for the strongest. The feeblest child of  God need not fear that there will be no place for him. None will be shut out but impenitent sinners and obstinate unbelievers.” ~JC Ryle

D. A Place prepared for those who trust in Him

The Second Coming

C. A Third cure for a troubled heart is found in the Second Coming

Application

  1. An incentive to Behave
  2. An Incentive to Witness
  3. An incentive to build the kingdom
  4. An incentive to love one another
  5. an Invitation
