Instruction Concerning the Betrayer – John 13:18-30 Part 1

Last week we saw Jesus’ instruction concerning and today we see His instruction concerning the .

Last week: Because Jesus has made us clean, we as He served us.

John 4:29

The woman at the well came to faith in Christ because she saw Him as a true

Jesus’ life was by the prophets and Jesus is a that will tell what is to happen.

John 13:18-19

Notice: There is one of the 12 that is not a true disciple

Jesus says that one of the disciples was not and that one would Him

1 John 2:19

You can’t radically what it is to be a church, use the same language, and be orthodox.

The progressive “church” has done much the same thing — they have used the of Christianity, but what they actually believe is so far from what is expressed in the Scriptures that these are not in any real and meaningful way.

For these, loving the culture is tantamount to not only loving people but also certain lifestyles and beliefs.

Theology matters — and the reason why is that bad theology is not only in error but it is .

Judas was with them, but he was not — and the reason — he didn’t with them.

Notice: What Jesus Says is Prophetic

“Jesus knew how much Judas’ duplicity would shake the faith of the other eleven disciples. Perhaps  they might think that Judas had outwitted Jesus. They needed to be assured that this was the outworking of God’s plan and that Jesus was fully aware of what was about to transpire. That is why he tells them, ‘before it comes.’” ~Gordon Keddie

Psalm 41:9

The Context to Psalm 41 is most likely the revolt of

2 Samuel 15:31

Jesus quotes suggesting that he felt the bitter hurt of betrayal as David did.

One of life’s most and times are because of the betrayal of one close to us.

Two things about betrayal:

Betrayal is among life’s hurts

Being betrayed (even at the deepest level) doesn’t you

Jesus was troubled in His spirit but didn’t out at Judas (He washed his feet).

Jesus didn’t become

Notice: The disciples are on Jesus’ mind

The more we see the betrayal of those close to us – the more we get.

Notice: This betrayal was ordained by God and was used for good

Humans make and are for those choices

Acts 2:23

The fact that God ordains all things that come to pass does not in any way human responsibility.

“God hath decreed in himself, from all eternity, by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely and unchangeably, all things, whatsoever comes to pass;1 yet so as thereby is God neither the author of sin nor hath fellowship with any therein;2 nor is violence offered to the will of the creature…” The 1689 London Baptist Confession

God is so sovereign that he decrees that comes to pass, but at the same time, His creatures freely make choices that from the ordained plan of God.

We take great in knowing that God is in of all things and knows what He is doing — even when we don’t.

Our Lord knows what it is to hurt like we do, and He is in the business of those who are hurting.
