Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament Law

What is the purpose of the Law?

Should a Christian get a Tattoo? Leviticus 19:28

Some will say, “We are not under the law but .”

What does that statement mean? What doesn’t it mean?

The Covenant of Works

We are commanded to “be ” — why?

God is Holy, and the sets forth what holiness is. We are to be just as He is.

To say that we are not under the law is to say that we are not living under a covenant of (meaning that our relationship or good standing before God is not achieved by our o to His commands).

Antinomianism  = Against the / meaning  that one is not obligated to keep the law

Three Kinds of Laws in the Old Testament

Law — The law given to Adam and Even in the Garden. Later, the Moral Laws were summarized in the 10 Commandments.

Law — Laws that were a guide to Israel’s worship that pointed toward Christ

Law — Laws and Penalties that governed Israel’s society

Three Uses of the Law

— We look into the law and see our own sinfulness and need of salvation.

— The Law is given to curb bad behavior

— The Law tells the believer how they ought to live

Note: The Law and the Gospel are the same.

“Before we preach law to people, we need to make sure they know the God who stands behind it and the story that goes before it. It is the God of grace and the story of grace.” ~Christopher Wright

The Motivation for Obedience to the Law

Psalm 119

How can we have the attitude toward the Law that the Psalmist has?

The Law reminds us that our before God has nothing to do with our own obedience.

The Law reminds us that our salvation has everything to do with Christ’s obedience (both active and passive) on our behalf.
