Life on the Ground Level
Introduction: The Bird’s Eye View
In the first four verses, we learn that Jesus has a different on this emergency.
The purpose of Lazarus’s illness and ultimate death was to the Son of God.
Mary loved to at the Lord’s feet and learn from Him
Martha had the gift of
John 11:3 — Lazarus is called the one Jesus.
The word love here is Phileo or love.
The message sent to Jesus was neither an invitation nor a to come to them because there was an assumption that Jesus would want to come.
In verse 5 the word is Agapeo which is the highest love — it is the love of that He has for His .
What do we learn about Jesus’ love for Mary, Martha, and Lazarus from verses 5 and 6:
A. From the Ground Level, we do not always see the that God has for us.
There is no misunderstanding here as to how Jesus about this family.
What Jesus did here was out of His for this family.
There are times in which we do not “” the love of God in our lives
Just because we do not loved by God doesn’t mean we cannot know He loves us!
God’s love for us is always , just as He always acts in perfect wisdom for the ultimate of those who are His.
B. Jesus’ purpose is not always to ease or limit the of His saints.
God allows His children to suffer, but the suffering of the saints does not mean God doesn’t care — it means that we see His great love for us in the of it.
C. The Suffering of saints is never without , but on the ground level, it might seem like it.
On the ground level, we do not (and cannot) see God’s for our suffering.
God is sovereign and has a purpose for that He does.
John Piper: In every moment in our lives, God is doing 10,000 things, and we might see three of them.
D. The only real option on the ground level is to our eyes on Jesus
On the ground level, the temptation is to fix our eyes on what is right in of us (the certain trial).
Hebrews 12:1-3
When we “glance” at Jesus and “gaze” at our problems, then our problems look and become such tyrants that will eventually overwhelm us. We must “glance” at our problems and “gaze” at the Lord Jesus.
