The Truth will Set you Free
October 2, 2022The Truth will Set you Free — John 8:31-38
Introduction: Freedom (MLK and Emma Lazarus)
~Free at Last
~Yearning to Breathe Free
What is it to truly be free?
Is Jesus speaking only to those who professed belief in Him, or is he speaking to the entire crowd? I would suggest he was speaking to the crowd.
Not all of those who claim to believe in Christ believe
What does it mean to have genuine faith? The one who has genuine faith .
The Word Abide is not a synonym for
To means to remain and not depart — it means to stay with Him — to not leave when “the battle grows hot.” (Luther)
The Crowd’s Response
The Jews didn’t believe they were to anyone
The Mishnah (an ancient Jewish text) said that Jews are in that they are sons of Abraham
The point is that these were in great bondage to sin and didn’t even it.
Many in today’s world believe themselves to be , but in reality, they are to sin (a slavery that leads to death).
Notice a couple of things about Jesus’ statement on slavery:
A. The practice of sin one to be a slave to sin
B. The practice of sin
Who is enslaved to sin?
Answer: who practices it
“The condition of the natural man is far, far worse than he imagines…Man is a fallen creature, totally depraved, with no soundness in him from the sole of his foot even unto the head. He is completely under the dominion of sin and bond-slave to divers lusts, so that he cannot cease from sin.” ~A.W. Pink
We are not sinners because we , but we sin because we are

These think that they are true because they are offspring of Abraham, but in reality, they are (The slave does not remain in the house forever).
It is difficult to hear that one isn’t actually but a slave, and they will not enjoy their present position forever — but this is the message that Jesus had for those in the crowd.
So if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed!
— One to be set free.
— Jesus is the of that freedom.
What does it mean to be a spiritual descendant of Abraham?
It means to as Abraham did!
Because of Abraham’s faith, God counted him as righteous! (Genesis 15:6)
