Hail in Egypt (Part 1)

Hail in Egypt — Exodus 9:13-35

Why would God do this?

  — God was punishing Egypt for Pharaoh’s disobedience

  — God is in the midst of saving his people for His glory and his Glory is on display

God must take Egypt out of the Israelites as he takes the Israelites out of Egypt

Three Purposes for the Plages in our text:

  1. To Demonstrate the Uniqueness of His Power (Verse 14)
  2. To show the Universality of God’s Praise (Verse 16)
  3. The Earth is the LORD’s (Verse 29)

Some suggest that when the Bible says that God is love it means that God is love.

The essence of Liberal Christianity: others no matter what

Illustration: Guy walks into a room….

Picture: Soldier

Liberal Christianity: Jesus is the heart of God (not the god of the Old Testament)

God’s wrath reveals His Mercy

We cannot understand the gospel (Mercy) unless we understand sin

Popular Trend: Sin is bad, and it is better not to sin, but everyone sins.

Lasting change in people’s lives does not happen through the preaching of the — it happens through preaching the .

The consequences of sin are and we all deserve to be punished as sinners.

The wages of sin is eternal death — eternal

Some say:

–There is a chance to escape hell after death but the author of Hebrews says that after death comes the Judgment.

–Some say that all will be redeemed in the end (universalism) — but the Bible says that the punishment of the wicked lasts for eternity.

–Some believe that the unredeemed are annihilated (or they just cease to exist) but the Bible is clear that the human soul will live forever.

We are like Pharaoh in that we hold onto our autonomy and want to be over ourselves — at least to some degree.

God could have struck these with and wiped them out but didn’t  Exodus 9:15

Are we better?

God hasn’t wiped us out because of mercy not because of worthiness

Is God obligated to show mercy?

The Plagues of History show Mercy in that God didn’t wipe out more of humanity!

Psalm 103

“God does not deal with according to our sins” (Verse 10)

The Justice of God demands that he deal with our — to overlook sin would make God .

God’s wrath hardens some and others
