Boils in Egypt Exodus 9:8-12

Introduction: Lewis and Clark

In the sight of Pharaoh

Physical has a way of getting our attention in a way other things cannot

Does the LORD bring pain and suffering into the lives of people?

Jeremiah 29:11

Many ways that people try to understand pain and suffering radically the sovereignty of God

Some say that God is sovereign but chooses to his sovereignty — that is nonsense!

“God is completely in control of everything but he makes it so that he is not completely in control of everything because is completely in control of everything and can do that.”  Nonsense

Just because we can string words together does not mean that they are not nonsense  — If God is all-powerful he can make a square circle or a married bachelor — these statements are nonsense.

Truth: God is in complete control or He is not — we can’t have it both ways!

Jeremiah 29:10

Is God sovereign? .

Moses did this in the of Pharaoh so that he would see who was responsible — the God of Israel!

The Hardening of Pharoah’s Heart

Exodus 9:12

Mystery of human responsibility and divine sovereignty

Again: the way some handle this reveals a lack of understanding of God’s sovereignty and human responsibility.

Before Pharaoh ever hardened his heart — God said that He would do it in Exodus 4:21

It is wrong to see the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart as a to Pharaoh. It isn’t that simple. The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart must be seen in the light of God’s for Pharaoh.

God is demonstrating His for the nation of Israel to see. Exodus 9:16

God’s power and purpose are on display in the midst of God liberating His people.

Speculation….

God has the power over people’s (sickness is a warning that one’s life is in danger)

The gods of Egypt

Amon Re — creator god that dispelled ailments — a great physician

Troth – god of healing arts

Imhotep – god of medicine

Sekhmet – the power to bring epidemics to an end

We too are tempted to worship these same gods (although the names have changed)

All of life is to be around trust in and dependence on God
