Heaps of Frogs — Exodus 7:25-8:15

Last time

Pharaoh’s heart remains

The Pharaoh’s magicians could not stop the plague but only it

God’s demand: Unconditional on the part of Pharaoh

Pharaoh should have realized after the first plague that he really had and he should have let the Israelites go

Progressive Christianity asks: Did God really ?

Refusal to obey the commands of God carries divine

The Hebrews were not created to the Egyptians but to the one true God

Heaps of Frogs

Plague: To strike a blow (with frogs) — it sounds humorous

The frogs made their way into every area of – in every cranny

This actually was very and not meant to be silly (ironic most definitely)

The Frog Goddess

Heqet: Egyptian goddess with the head of a frog (and often its body too!)

Frogs could not be in Egypt

There were so many frogs that people would actually start to loath what they

Heqet was the agent of (she breathed life into the bodies that were made by Khnum (her husband)

She controlled the population by protecting the crocodiles (the plage was a direct attack on her power)

Heqet would assist in — women would turn to her in childbirth (for safety and protection for themselves and their child)

Exodus 1:22

Ways we are Tempted to worship the modern version of Heqet

Life before modern healthcare: Even more

A modern version of Heqet could be “ rights”

When one is faced with an unplanned pregnancy there is a temptation to make a sacrifice to the goddess of fertility by getting an

Unwanted or Unwanted Pregnancy: “We are not ready” “The father isn’t around” “We can not afford a child” Etc

We should not pretend that an unplanned/unwanted pregnancy is not — all of these situations are extremely difficult.

Childbirth is a spiritual issue

Deuteronomy 12:31

IS abortion a modern version of child sacrifice?

We cannot downplay what abortion is — it is the murder of a child

Other ways we may bow at a modern Heqet:  Birth Control, manipulating the human genome, Fertility treatments, and Adoption

It is true that it takes time to the will of God and often a lot longer to start to it

The Second Plague and Prayer

Pharaoh uses the personal for God (LORD or Yahweh)

Pharaoh knows something of the of Yahweh

“Prayer is one of the best tests of a person’s true spiritual condition. A life of prayer depends on a person, saving relationship with God.” ~Philip Raykin

Our prayer lives are a constant that we constantly fall short in trusting God in the everyday circumstances of life

Christ Jesus’ prayer life was perfect…for us!
