What is the Purpose of the Law?

What do we mean when we speak of the Law? 

Categories of Laws:

Ceremonial Laws: Expired because in the priestly work of Christ

Civil Laws: Expired with the demise of the Jewish government 

Moral Laws: xpire because these are based on God’s character 

1 Timothy 1:7-11

The law is God commands 

How is it that these are using the Law wrongly?

By Promoting speculations and adding to the gospel 

The Law is distinct and from the Gospel 

The Law says: Do this and live. The gospel says: It is in order that you may live.

The Law and evangelism: One needs to be of sin and need for his righteousness 

What is the believer’s relationship with the Law?

Heresy #1: Antinomianism: Against the Law or rejection of the law when it comes to Christian living

Three uses of the Law:

A mirror to shows one’s sin in light of an all-holy God

To Curb bad behavior 

A guide for believers 

Heresy #2: Nomism: Unhealthy reliance on the Law

The best and greatest motivation for the Christian to be obedient is gratitude
