Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

John 6:1-15

Outline:

A. Purpose

B. People (We will most likely not have time for this)

C. Perception

What is the purpose of this miracle?

Important point: Passover was drawing near

Important point: Jesus’ question to Philip

These things highlight the failure of human

Jesus is the all- one (for He provides more than what is needed)

Isaiah 1:19

Psalm 22:26

John 6:35

On a human level, we cannot find spiritual prosperity in anything but

We cannot create our own

Arthur W. Pink: “This is what Jesus does to all his people. He comes to the poor bankrupt believer, and, placing in his hand a draft on the resources of heaven, says to him, ‘write on it what thou wilt.’ Such is our precious Lord Still… we have so little faith in things unseen and eternal. We draw so little on the resources of Christ. We come not to him with our spiritual wants — our empty vessels — and draw from the ocean of his grace.”

Think of your life as an empty vessel: What do you attempt to fill it with? Have you asked God to supply what you need?

Philippians 4:19

means that even in the midst of trials and hardships one’s vessel is full

James Boice: “Whatever it is, Jesus is sufficient in it”

Do you feel forgotten? Jesus’ compassion on the crowd before they even sat down shows that he has not and will not forget you.

Two dangers:

A. Hostility

B. Success

Success: the people wanted to make him king by force

Before Jesus would reign as he must for the sins of every person that would place their faith and trust in Jesus

William Barclay: “When we want comfort in sorrow, when we want strength in difficulty, when we want peace in turmoil, when we want help when life has gotten us down, there is no one so wonderful as Jesus. We talk to him and walk with him and open our hearts to him. But when he comes to us with some stern demand for sacrifice, with some challenge to effort, with the offer of some cross, then we will have nothing to do with him. When we examine our hearts, it may be that we will find that we too love Jesus for what we can get out of him, and when He comes to us with great challenges and demands we too grow lukewarm, and even resentful and hostile to this disturbing demanding Christ.”

What does it mean to be with Christ? Simply: We do not do anything outside of God’s will for our lives

James Boice: We know that we have said no to what is contrary to Gods will for our lives when we stop

Complaining is expressing rebellion against God — Murmuring is expressing rebellion agast God under one’s breath

What is God’s purpose for you?

Romans 8:29

This happens through submission not rebellion
