God’s Sovereignty and Our Responsibility

1 Kings 12:14-15

Interpretation: we are either

Countless of a given text

Is God’s sovereignty an excuse?  If God is completely sovereign then why should we evangelize? 

God’s sovereignty then becomes an excuse to not share the .

“Means”

“God, in his ordinary providence makes use of means, yet is free to work without, above, and against them at His pleasure.” The 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith

Why evangelize? Well, there is a reason God commanded it — and that is that evangelism is the means by which God accomplishes His purpose of in the world. 

Acting Prudently 

“To act prudently, in this context, means to use all legitimate, biblical means at our disposal to avoid harm to ourselves or others and to bring about what we believe to be the right course of events.” Jerry Bridges

Solomon’s choice: Go after foreign women and worship their gods

God’s Sovereign choice: Tear the kingdom away from Solomon after his death

Solomon’s choice: try and kill Jeroboam

Rehoboam’s choice: listen to Jeroboam and seek counsel 

Rehoboam’s choice: listen to the younger men and be harder on the people

God’s Sovereignty: Using all of this to bring about what he said would come to pass.
