Beyond Wonderful

A few times God did not reveal his name: Genesis 32:29 , Judges 13:18, Revelation 19:12

Peli’y =

Judges 13:1-25

Wonderful

Wonderful

Wonderful

Simply

Exodus 3:20 (paw-la, another form of wonderful)

Exodus 15:11

Psalm 139:6

Psalm 9:1

Isaiah 9:6

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful. . .

The messenger they encountered was a Theophany. Jesus is the physical representation of God on earth.

Jesus is wonderful:

His wonderful birth.

His wonderful ministry.

His wonderful words.

His wonderful healing. (Luke 13:17)

The wonderful things he did. (Matthew 21:15)

His wonderful redemption. (1 Peter 2:9)

Two helpful tips for parents:

1. Express that

Why did Samson have to follow the laws of a Nazarite from birth? To remind him that his strength came from the Almighty. It was a privilege to walk with God.

2. !

Judges 13:8

Judges 13:9

A Great Promise:

“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Prov. 22:6

At the worst moment of Samsons life, he turned his heart back to God. And he prayed! Who taught him to pray? His parents. Your kids will go through struggles and hurts, the best thing you can do is teach them to pray.

Pastor’s Notes:

Judges 13:2 Manoah has the root “Noah” which means comfort or rest.

Judges 13:3 Why did God tell the woman what she already knew? She was well aware she was “barren” and could not have children. By telling her himself, God did two things. First he let her know that he did indeed understand her heartache and struggle. Second, he gave a diagnosis that she was indeed barren so that when she got pregnant she would know the Lord had done a miracle.

Judges 13:4 Notice the mother is expected to obey Nazirite law so long as she carried the baby because the baby would be a Nazirite (not her.) But so long as the baby was in her, she was to obey the laws of the Nazirite. Why? Because the baby was already alive inside her womb.

Judges 13:5 The laws outlined are an explanation of Numbers 6.

Judges 13:8 Manoah seems upset God spoke to his wife and not to him. When God comes back in Judges 13:9 notice he comes back to the woman. Why is God appearing to the woman and not the man? Two reasons: First to show that God can have a personal relationship with women. Knowing God is not reserved for men. Second, God wanted them to understand that parenthood is a team effort.

Judges 13:16 God refused to stay and eat with Manoah. Other places in the Bible he ate with people. But usually when God stayed and fellowshipped over food, the people he was with were aware they were in the presence of the Almighty. Manoah is completely unaware of who exactly he is with. (evidenced in Judges 13:17) So he is told to simply offer a goat to YHWH.

Judges 13:18 The Lord said his name is “Peli’y.” (Pele) That means wonderful or secret. Bears the idea of too good to be expressed. Wonderful beyond understanding.

Judges 13:19 He offers a sacrifice “to the one who works wonders” Wonders there is paw-la. He is honoring the name that God just revealed to him. He’s starting to get it!

Judges 13:20 The messenger goes up in the fire, making it clear now that this is the Lord himself. This is not just an ordinary fire, but the fire of a sacrifice, showing that God accepted the sacrifice offered to him.

Judges 13:22 Manoah is scared because he has been in the presence of the Almighty did not realize it.

Judges 13:24 Samson means “sun.” Important that YHWH blessed him.

Judges 13:25 The text calls God Rauch Elohim, referring to the Holy Spirit.

Few parents got a tougher assignment than Samson’s parents. He would chase women, marry a Philistine wife and break their hearts over and over. But in the end their faithful parenting of Samson would lay a foundation for him to make a final stand to redeem Israel.

……………..

By the way, I have a book on Judges that covers this portion titled, “Judges, The Wild West of the Bible.”
