How To Come Near to God

4:8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.

2 Great truths:

1. God is a BIG God. Infinite. All Powerful. Creator of all. He can send floods. Part sea. Stand earth still in orbit. Raise the dead.

2. God is personal. God is not so big he fails to be personal. He not only created the world, created a man and walked with Adam. God didn’t just flood the earth, he still personally saw Noah and walked with him. Took Abraham outside and showed him all of the bigness of the vast starry night, yet he still saw Abraham.

Luke 10:38-42

  • Need both Mary and Martha.
  • Mary: Loves worship. Feel her faith.
  • Martha: Always serving. Working.
  • Mary’s: Favorite verse: “As the deer pants for water.”
  • Martha: “Faith without works is DEAD.”

A personal relationship with the Lord reminds me a lot of the rooms of a house.

1. Spend time with him in

  • Luke 12:38: And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house
  • Where Jesus goes, his 12 Apostles go. She has a house full!
  • Serving is essential to your spiritual growth. Health. Relationship with Jesus.
  • The danger of a servant: Get distracted. Anxious and troubled about many things. We can forget that there is more to the house than just the kitchen.

2. Spend time with him at the

  • The Bible is often described as food. Jeremiah 15:16, Matthew 4:4, 1 Peter 2:2. These and many other verses show us God gave His Word to us to be our spiritual food.
  • Luke 12:39, Mary sat at Jesus’ feet listening to him. Feasting on his words.
  • The Bible is exciting because it is God’s story. It’s not everything that happened; it’s the Lord telling us about things from His perspective.

3. Spend time with him on the .

  • The disciples saw Jesus raise the dead, drive out demons, calm the storm. They only thing they asked him to teach them to do was pray. They seemed to understand that if they could grasp his prayer life, they would understand the rest.
  • Notice Jesus prayed all the time. People are always looking for him, and he’s out on the porch praying. What was he doing when the five thousand found him? Praying. Before he started ministry, he went out and prayed for 40 days. Before the cross, he prayed. On the cross, he prayed. After the cross, the resurrection, he prayed!

God loves

  • Luke 10:41.
  • If I come over to visit, I don’t need the house clean or a nice meal Because what I really want is time with you. We get worried about things the Lord isn’t worried about.

My Relationship with Jesus Will (John 11)

  • The more you know Jesus, the more you will love him.
  • Jesus didn’t give Martha or Mary a lot of answers. He gave them Himself. What I need in a crisis is not answers, it’s the Lord.
  • John 12, I think is Lazarus resurrection party! Notice, John 12:3, Mary is always at the feet of Jesus.
