Your relationship with the Holy Spirit

I. David had an relationship with God’s Spirit.

  • 1 Samuel 16:13 says that the Spirit of Yahweh came upon David in “power.”
  • 2 Samuel 11-12 records a season of sinful behavior in David’s life. He took Bathsheba, and murdered her husband Uriah.
  • The Prophet Nathan confronted David with a parable set up in a manner that would cause the king to indict himself.

 

II. My attitude toward defines my relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 51:11-12 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation.

8 Things That Happens When the Holy Spirit is quenched

1 Thess. 5:19: Do not quench the fire of the Holy Spirit.

1. God’s voice is dimmed. (Psalm 51:4)

2. Your moral compass is damaged.

3. The Lord’s pleasure is silent. (Psalm 51:6, 1 Kings 15:5)

4. Obedience feels like slavery.

5. Scripture becomes largely unavailable.

6. Peace becomes circumstantial.

7. My heart loses generosity.

8. You stop fighting battles.

 

III. David allowed God to break him. (Psalm 51:1-12)

What happens if I let God break me?

  • again. (Psalm 51:13)
  • Again. (Psalm 51:8, Psalm 51:14-15)
  • Again. (Psalm 51:16-17)
