Great Things To Enjoy

October 16, 2022

Annoying, tell you what to enjoy. We think: Don’t tell me what to enjoy. I’m capable of deciding what will give me joy. But in this parable, Jesus shows us some things we should enjoy.

The Parable is called the “Parable of the Rich Fool.”

Text: Luke 12:13-24

  • Luke 12:14, Jesus tells the parable because they came to him for judgment on a family argument.
  • Luke 12:15, Jesus makes it clear that contrary to our instincts; things, security and money do not make us happy. In fact, that’s an attitude we need to guard against.
  • Luke 12:19, “soul” he is speaking of his own deep inner being.
  • Luke 12:22, Jesus turned to the “disciples.” This passage is really about discipleship. He’s telling this parable to instruct those of us who say we follow Jesus.
  • Luke 12:24, you are more valuable than birds.
  • Luke 12:34, If you want a heart for God’s kingdom, you have to invest in God’s kingdom.

Four things Jesus encouraged us to enjoy:

1. Enjoy

  • Luke 12:31, notice the word “kingdom.” We are citizens of His Kingdom. Our greatest opportunity in life is that as citizens of the kingdom, we have the invitation to know the king himself more deeply.
  • Luke 12:32, God wants to give us the kingdom. That is, a deep walk with Him.

2. Enjoy

  • Our soul was created in the image of a generous God.
  • Who should I be generous toward? Everyone! Especially God. (Luke 12:21)
  • We tend to view “giving” and “tithing” as issues of church fundraising. They are not. We should see the act of giving as a vital part of our discipleship. As followers of Jesus we are committed to His Work on earth.

3. Enjoy

  • When we are worried all the time, we are not enjoying God’s love.
  • We are more valuable than things.
  • Our constant worry through life can set an unhealthy tone.
  • Psalm 37:25.

4. Enjoy what

  • The guy with he barns never got to enjoy it.
  • 1 Timothy 6:6, Godliness with contentment is of great gain. I take from that that it is impossible to be discontent and Godly.
  • Luke 12:27, Lilies don’t even have to work at being beautiful! He compares people to Lilies. Because Lilies are beautiful, and they are delicate.
  • What caused Jesus to tell this parable? (Luke 12:13) A family argument. Jesus pulls them away from the argument to remind everyone that life is more than stuff.
