Your Most Important Breakthrough

Text: Luke 8:4-8

A breakthrough moment is a moment when: God moves me forward in a new way. How do I get the breakthrough I need? Break through moments happen when I hear God speak. Always. You never have a God-lead breakthrough with without hearing from God first.

Examples:

• Creation came into existence when God spoke.
• Light broke through into our world when God spoke: Let there be light.
• Noah built an ark after God spoke to him.
• Moses lead people, parted sea only after he encountered the burning bush and spoke to God.
• Elijah was comforted by the whisper of God.
• Habakkuk went to the watchtower to hear a word from the Lord.
• Abraham left his country after hearing God speak to him.
• Joshua took Jericho after God spoke to him.
• The prophets were called when God’s Word came to them.
• Jeremiah said God’s Word was like “fire” in his bones.
• Lazarus came out of the tomb alive when God spoke to him.

God’s voice always precedes spiritual breakthroughs.

I. To hear God, I must (Luke 8:9-15)

• 8:10, parables are not to make things more confusing. But you do have to think about them. You have to take time. If you don’t spend time thinking about the things of God, you aren’t going to get parables. I think Jesus used parables to find who was authentic and truly interested in spiritual things. They are the ones who would come to him and say, “What does that mean?”
• 8:11-12: The farmer is God, the Seed is the Word of God, The soil is my life.
• What causes people closed to God? (Disinterest = Busy) (Pride = Don’t need God) (Bitterness = God allow that?)

II. To hear God: I must Protect

• When something grows on the path, it’s in the way. If you try to rush your quiet time, you are putting it on the path of life; and it will get crushed like a plant under foot.
• Every person God used greatly had the habit of spending time alone with God.

III. To hear God speak, I must Develop

The first one on that list is most important: That you read the Word of God for yourself and know what it says. Reading the Word will give you insights to God, his character and his plans. It will help direct your life and give you clarity. It will also protect you from weirdness.

IV. To hear God, I must Make room for God to speak.

• Thorns choke. It’s hard to hear when you’re choking.
• Thorns are weeds. They crowd out things that would otherwise be healthy and growing. A thorn or weed in your life is anything that crowds out God.

Jesus points out three kinds of weeds:

• Life’s worries.
• Riches.
• Pleasures.
