Palms Baptist Church The Beautiful King Archived – May 29, 2022 View This Week’s Note View All Past Notes View This Note w/o Blanks Main Scripture Reference(s) Judges Judges 9 The Beautiful King May 29, 2022 / David Squyres / Judges Judges 9 The Beautiful King Profiles in Judges, part 6 I. Earths Rulers Make Us Judges 9:1-56 expository notes This is the longest passage in Judges. There’s no “Judge” in Judges 9. The divine name, Yahweh, is not cited. Instead, the Lord is called by the more general name, “Elohim” (God.) Abimelech means, “My father is king.” (Gideon said he would not be king but named his son my father is king.) Abimelech is the son of a concubine. A concubine is a woman a man would take care of, but not marry. Her function was the produce children for him. A Slaughter: Judges 9:5 he killed seventy brothers on one stone. There are markers of Baal worship in this act: First to kill 70 on a “single stone refers to a religious sacrifice. When he is anointed king, it is at “the oak of the pillar at Shechem” (9:6.) This was a propped-up stone representing Baal. Gideon once pulled down an altar to Baal. Now his son kills Gideon’s children in a sacrifice to Baal. A Prophecy: Jotham’s sermon at Mount Gerizim is important both in location and content. Shechem sits in a valley between Mount Ebal and Gerizim. On these mountains the Hebrews cited the blessings and curses of the law. (Joshua 8:31-35) That he preaches on the mount where the blessings were cited is to slap the nation; they are not living up the blessing that could be theirs. The Parable of the Trees is a famous Old Testament parable. (Judges 9:8-14) A Fig tree is the most common tree in Israel. It makes us healthy. The Oliver Tree makes us holy. The Vine makes some happy. The thorn bush does nothing but wound. A Demon: God “salah ruah” (sent a “negative spirit” or a “calamitous spirit.” We would say a demon. The Nobility run for the safety of the tower. This is the same tower/temple they robbed to pay Abimelech. Compare Judges 9:49 and Judges 9:15. That he burns them is the fulfilment of the prophecy that fire would come from the bramble. A Stone Judges 9:52, a millstone is typically massive. They had small handheld millstones used to grind corn. But the text seems to imply he was hit by something big. Judges 9:54 is funny. He doesn’t want to be remembered for being killed by a woman; but it’s what we remember him for! He tries to cover up the manner of his death; his only problem is that God’s writing a book! Compare: Judges 9:56-57 with Galatians 6:7 II. The Heart of a Great King: 1. He’s the 2. He’s a 3. He’s a 4. He’s a Save PDF Locally Click to save a copy of the filled-in notes to a PDF file on your device Generate File Click to View PDF Save PDF to Google Drive Click to save a copy of the filled-in notes to a PDF file on your Google Drive account(For Apple devices, use Chrome browser or go to SETTINGS>SAFARI and uncheck BLOCK POPUPS.)
