Thanksgiving at the Red Sea

November 21, 2021

In Exodus 14, God parted the sea and brought His people to the other side on dry ground. On the shores of the Red Sea, the Hebrews broke into total thanksgiving. Today we are going to join their praise.

Give Thanks For:

1. For the C

Exodus 15:1, one moment they were complaining that God hates them, but he changed their hearts and now they sing his praises.

The ongoing work of salvation to transform your heart is called “sanctification.”

2. Give Thanks for

  • The Red Sea is typology of the salvation of Christ. As the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt, we were slaves to Sin. Jesus led us from slavery to the promised land.
  • Exodus 15:3, Yahweh is a man of war. For God, there are some things worth fighting for. God is not passive toward you.
  • Exodus 15:5, deep covers them. Same word as Gen. 1:2, the Spirit of God was hovering over the deep.
  • Exodus 15:6, God’s “right hand” is mentioned over 50 times in the Bible.

3. Victories that Should

These are moments in life you thought you were not going to make it. But God came through and gave you victory that could only have come from Him.

  • Exodus 15:7, he consumes Egypt like “stubble.” That’s divine retribution. Pharoah made the Hebrews collect stubble, now destroys them like stubble.
  • Exodus 15:8, the deeps “congealed.” Hebrews word for thickening or condensing. Job 10:10 uses the same word to describe curdling cheese.,
  • Exodus 15:10, Though the odds were far against the Hebrews, God used nothing more than wind to destroy their enemies!

4. His

God’s transcendence is his absolutely unique Being. There is no one like the Lord.

  • Exodus 15:11, describes God’s excellency. We don’t worship an “A-Ok” God. He is the Almighty and Glorious above all that exists.
  • The dead bodies of the Egyptians should cause the Hebrews to make an assessment. Because Egypt had gods; but their gods left them dead in the sea, while the powerful God of Heaven rescued his people.

5. For His

  • Exodus 15:12, God leads out of love. His every command is the result of his loving nature.
  • Exodus 15:14-16 is prophetic of what will happen when the people of God move into the promised land. As God gave victory at the Red Sea, he will give victory in Conquest of Canaan.
  • Exodus 15:16, noticed they are the people he “purchased.” With lambs blood symbolizing the ultimate purchase Christ made with His blood.
  • Exodus 15:17, God is not just leading them out of Egypt, but he’s leading them somewhere = to Himself. The imagery is that God is already at Jerusalem, and from there he is pulling them through the sea, through the wilderness, toward Himself.

6. For

  • Exodus 15:18, the “forever and ever” aspect of God’s nature should sweep us away with joy. He isn’t a leader who will die or go away. He remains in power to rule forever. In fact, even if you kill Him, he’ll rise again.
  • We give little thought to the “reign” of God. Ever paused and just told the Lord, “I’m so glad you’re in charge.”

7. For

  • Exodus 15:19 concludes by telling us that the Lord brought the people of Israel through on dry ground. That dry ground is like a love note to Israel. Ancient people were terrified of water. God made it so they didn’t even encounter a puddle while going through the Red Sea.
  • The dry ground should remind us that God cares about the details of life. He who made the galaxy also made the cell. The God of the mountains is also the God of the Sand particles.
