Angels and Demons in the Life of Jesus:

I. His

1. Announcement to Zechariah. (Luke 1:8-24)

2. Announcement to Mary. (Luke 1:26-38)

6 Promises to Mary:

–You will be pregnant.

–He will be great.

–He will called Son of the Most High.

–God will give him the throne of King David

–He will reign over “Jacob” (Israel) forever.

–His Kingdom will never end.

3. Announcement to Joseph. (Matthew 1:20-25, Matthew 2:12-13, Matthew 2:20)

4. Announcement to Shepherds. (Luke 2:8-15)

 

II. His The Battle Begins. (Matt. 4:1-11)

Matt. 4:11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

  • Attend to Jesus’ physical needs after long period fasting.
  • Makes clear: The angels serve the Son of Man.
  • Michael Wilkins: “More important, this comment indicates the cosmic significance of the scene that has just been played. The Son has begun the invasion of Satan’s domain.”
  • The last mention of Angels until the last night of his life.

Luke 4:13: When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

 

III. Jesus and

  • Mark 1:27
  • Jesus robbed Satan of his power. Mark 12-28-29
  • Jesus forced the demons to be quiet. Mark 1:32-34
  • Jesus gave authority to his followers over demons. Luke 10:17-18

 

IV. Some Notable Moments:

1. Legion: (Mark 5:1-20)

Key take aways:

  • The demons gave him superhuman strength.
  • The demons caused him to harm himself.
  • They pleaded with Jesus to leave.
  • Jesus removed all the demons.
  • Legion begged to go with Jesus.

 

2. The Mute Boy: (Mark 9:14-29)

 

V. The Angel on the (Luke 22:39-44)

  • An angel speared to “strengthen” him. (Luke 22:43)
  • Luke 22:44, sweat like blood. Lit: Sweat became thick blood clots. [hemohidrosis] Documented medical phenomenon: someone under enough stress, the tissue of their body can break down and blood comes through the pours of the skin.

VI. The

  • Arrest: Peter comes sword. (Matt. 26:52-54, esp. v.53)
  • The cross was a spiritual victory. (Col. 2:15, Zechariah 3)

IX. Observations:

1. All the spirit world submits to Jesus. Demons don’t want to. Have to.

2. Jesus is absolutely unafraid of the demonic.

3. Angels only appear twice to Jesus. Both times to help him.
